Writing Children's Books

Course Number: CRWR 225

You know how important reading is to opening up your children's world - that's why you read them bedtime stories and then encourage them to read on their own as soon as they are able. So chances are, you have an idea for a children's story you want to write but aren't sure how to get started. This course teaches you how to structure a children's book or young adult novel, develop plot, create characters that resonate, and write dialogue that's real.
No grades are given for this course.
Faculty: Richard Scarsbrook's novel Cheeseburger Subversive was short-listed for several awards including the 2004 Canadian Young Adult Book of the Year Award. Destiny's Telescope features stories that have won the Lawrence House Centre for the Arts Short Story Competition and the New Orphic Short Fiction Competition. Featherless Bipeds has been short-listed for the Canadian Library Association's 2007 Young Adult Novel of the Year Award.
