Justice, Equality and Rights Course Number: POLS 024 Since the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was introduced in 1982, Canada has undergone a revolution whereby judges have increasingly come to replace parliamentarians as the architects of our nation's understanding and application of justice. The implications for our legal delineation of rights are examined through the study of some of Canada's Supreme Court decisions about a number of controversial issues such as pornography, abortion, unions, sexual orientation, the rights of the accused, as well as the treatment of Native Peoples, religious minorities, immigrants, and refugees. Particular case studies are used to illustrate the decisive role played by the courts in furthering the Canadian ideal of equality. Note: For students taking the online version of this course, refer to the section entitled, Recommendations for Online Learners under General Education. This course qualifies as a General Education credit.
